Dad to Dad – Hypnosis for Childbirth (Hypnobirthing) for dads

Hi, my name’s Barry. I’m Sophie’s husband and as she thought it would be a good idea to get a Dad’s perspective on here, I’ve put together a few thoughts on Hypnosis for Childbirth (Hypnobirthing)!

Barry & DouglasThe birth of our son, Dougie, was really hard work. Yes, even for me! We were both left with a huge feeling of relief that it was all over, but magical, it was not. When Sophie got pregnant again and said she wanted to try Hypnosis for Childbirth techniques – more commonly known as Hypnobirthing.  I completely supported her…as a sceptic of course!!

I was not 100% keen on attending a ‘Hippo’ course, but once I was there, I could see it made a lot of sense. The classes were really chilled out and we enjoyed the chance to relax with the guided hypnosis sessions. Although we did do a small amount of practice at home together, Sophie put in most of the hard work and she started to seem relaxed about the thought of labour again.
sophies birth 2.3.09 005There was a lot of information for men that helped explain the mechanics of birth and it made me feel more confident about questioning medical decisions. It also gave me a whole raft of ideas about being more proactive in the labour, so I did not feel like a spare part again.
During the labour, Sophie went deep within herself which in turn helped me to relax. I enjoyed it so much that I caught our daughter under the water and even cut the cord without passing out!
It was incredibly bonding and I was in total awe at the amazing natural ability that women possess!
